Scarlet Radiance is a concept of minimalistic 2D Metroidvania without any combat. The player incarnates Scarlet, a shadowy form trapped inside an ancient and lifeless temple. The goal is to open the final door by gathering several keys, which will require to learn new skills to navigate through the labyrinthic environment and get in previously unaccessible rooms. The game relies on its exploration and a few light puzzles delivering environmental narration, indirectly -- the themes of isolation, depression and death.

This is my first end-of-year school project at e-artsup, made alone to challenge myself: a month only to develop a playable Metroidvania without prior coding skills and to design a satisfying but small map. It is now considered a prototype of Scarlet Reborn, a fully fledged version of the concept which will enter production if time allows it someday.

    Anecdotes:

  • The game has been made with the free version of Construct 2, which have a limited amount of code blocks per project. It led to a lot of small optimizations and reuses to avoid reaching the limit while not impacting the gameplay.
  • During my end-of-year defense, the game was running on an external screen that was not correctly calibrated: during puzzle phases, it was displaying similar levels of white for both the selected ring and the other ones, which led to some confusion about how to resolve them. It has taught me to always add another layer of indication in-game to compensate a potential hardware difference on players' side.
